Show me, tell me questions with effect from December 2017

1. Tell me how you would check that the direction indicators are working. You do not need to exit the vehicle.
Apply the indicator or hazard warning switch. You can hear the ticking and see the lights flashing on the instrument panel. You could check the functioning of all indicators by walking around the car.

2. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
Press the brake pedal, the brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off and the vehicle should not pull to one side.

3. Tell me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car.
Switch the ignition on and operate the brake pedal. Make use of reflections in windows, garage doors, etc, or ask someone to stand at the rear of the car.


Steering Wheel 4. Tell me how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained as you start the engine, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively, turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is working. If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly.


5. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how the tyre pressures should be checked.
In the manufacturer's guide usually kept in the glove box. Use a reliable pressure gauge at a garage or you may have one at home. Check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don't forget the spare tyre, and remember to refit the valve caps.

6. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
There must be no cuts or bulges and at least 1.6mm of tread depth across the middle ¾ of the tyre and all the way around. Don’t forget the spare.

Mirror 7. Tell me how you would check that the headlights & tail lights are working. You do not need to exit vehicle.
Operate switch and point out indicator light on the instrument panel. (Turn on ignition if necessary) You could check the functioning of all lights by walking around the vehicle.

8. Tell me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use them. You do not need to exit the vehicle.
Operate switch (turn on ignition and dipped headlights if necessary). Check warning light is on. Explain that you would use them when visibility is less than 100 metres and you would switch them off when visibility has improved or if there is a vehicle behind you.

9. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system. (ABS)
A warning light will illuminate on the instrument panel if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.

Headlight10. Tell me how you switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on.
Turn on the ignition and operate switch after turning on dipped headlights, check the main beam warning light is showing on the instrument panel.

11. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. N.B. Some restraints might not be adjustable.

12. Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
Identify reservoir, check level against high/low markings.

13. Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient coolant.
Identify high/low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to correct level. Engine must be cool before removing cap.

14. Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check the engine has sufficient oil.
Identify dipstick/oil level indicator. Car must be on level ground. With a dipstick you would remove and wipe the end with a clean rag, then reinsert, remove and check for an oil mark between the minimum and maximum markers.

15. When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would operate the horn?
Check is carried out by using control.

16. When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would wash and clean the front windscreen?
Operate control to wash and wipe the front windscreen.

17. When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would wash and clean the rear windscreen?
Operate control to wash and wipe the rear windscreen.

18. When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would set the rear demister?
Press the button for the heated rear screen. A light will appear on the button.

19. When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would demiste the front windscreen?
Adjust the relevant controls to demist the front windscreen.

20. When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would switch on your dipped headlights?
Operate switch and point out indicator light on the instrument panel.

21. When it is safe to do so, can show me how you would open and close the side window?
Press the switch to lower and then close the drivers door window.
